Do online sessions work?

Yes, online sessions can be very helpful for challenges with anxiety, depression, and related concerns. The same evidence-based approaches are used in online as in-person sessions. Like in-person sessions, the conversation feels safe and secure and goes at your own pace. Online sessions work especially well for teens and adults who are verbal and are able to have a conversation over the phone or a videochat service.

Why do sessions online?

Online sessions are easy and convenient. You can do sessions in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Also, you do not have to travel to a therapist's office for sessions. Lastly, some people have fewer concerns over stigma toward therapy when sessions are online rather than in-person as they do not have to worry about others seeing them enter or leave a therapist's office.

How do online sessions work?

To complete online sessions, you will use a link that you receive via email to a secure videochat service. The session is then completed on this secure videochat service. If you prefer, sessions can also be done by phone.

What should I do during my online sessions when I live with family or roommates?

To help ensure that you online sessions are confidential, you are strongly encouraged to consider doing the following during each session:

  1.  Always have sessions in a private room (e.g., bedroom) of your home with the door closed

  2. Wear ear buds so only you can hear what I say

  3. Turn on soft music or white noise to create background noise

  4. Ask family members/roommates to either be in a different part of the home or leave the home (e.g., run errands, do outside chores, or go on community outings)

Can I use insurance to help cover the costs?

You will need to pay for your session in full after each one is completed. If you have an extended health benefits plan through work, treatment costs may partially or fully covered. If so, you can submit the receipts to your insurance provider for reimbursement. Please contact your insurer for information about reimbursement before your first session. Many insurers (e.g., Great West Life, Manulife Financial, Sunlife Financial, OTIP) and plans cover registered psychologists, but this is something you will want to confirm with your insurer. Other things you will want to confirm with your insurer include the services covered (e.g., counselling, psychotherapy), amount of reimbursement per hour (e.g., 80% coverage up to a certain dollar amount per hour), and total amount of yearly reimbursement (e.g., $2000 per policy year). Also, some plans require written approval from your family doctor before sessions can be reimbursed.

How do I get started?

Please contact me to set up a free initial phone meeting. During this call, we will discuss what to expect, the reason(s) why you/your child are seeking treatment, and I will answer any questions you may have. Also, I will ask you some more questions to better understand your situation. Initial phone calls are 20mins long, and they are free. Also, you will need to complete and return consent forms and a questionnaire about yourself/your child. Then we will schedule the first online session.
